I think I speak for a lot of people when I say, enough is enough
Half-Blood Prince is a wonderful book. It has twists, turns, and JK's use of wit has taken on a new level of greatness. Sadness, madness, love and hate- all are used extensively, to great effect. This book, like all the others, is a modern masterpiece.
So why the HELL is half the fandom going nuts over the romance?
Maybe I have a different view on it; I'm a hard-core Blaise/Hermione shipper who enjoys a side dish of Ron/Draco, Harry/Millicent, and Neville/Padma. I know the chances of these ships happening is about the same odds as Moody's patronus being a fuzzy white kitten. They're not going to happen, and I accept that.
However, it appears that a good number of people are not taking the new ships very well.
To which I say, get over it.
A lot of the Ron/Hermione shippers are going gaga. Yes, the vast majority of us knew it was going to happen, in some fashion or another. Hooray. Good for you. You got what you wanted.
Now please do us a favour and shut up about it.
I'm not speaking to the Ron/Hermione shippers who enjoy it for what it is and let it go; I'm talking about the Ron/Hermione shippers who crow about how right they were and how they're canon.
Guess what? NO ONE CARES!
Shipping in the fandom isn't about what's canon or not, for the most part; it's what people prefer. That's why we have such disparate ships, from Ron/Hermione to Dumbledore/Giant Squid. Shipping is about personal opinion, what we take a particular fancy to and enjoy. It's not about being right or wrong, it's about having fun with imaginaing scenarios, and then oftentimes writing fanfiction about. What, did you think all the Harry/Hermione shippers are suddenly going to turn over and stop writing H/Hr? Not on the likely.
Again, I want to stress that this isn't directed towards the Ron/Hermione shippers, by and large; it's just towards the ones who feel the need to be brutally obnoxious about it. But the rest of you might want to do yourselves a favour and tell them to sit down; they're giving the whole lot of you an unsavoury name. There are 'quiet' Ron/Hermione shippers who absolutely refuse to join any Ron/Hermione ship thread or website they see because they are appalled at some of the going-ons there. Lighten up; you were right about a relationship that was fairly self-evident to begin with. That doesn't make you special, or psychic.
Of course, some of the Harry/Hermione shippers aren't off the hook, as well.
I started out as a Harry/Hermione shipper, and as far as canon-possible relationships go, that was the one I was always quietly rooting for. I knew it was unlikely, but as I said before, it was just personal preference, and nothing more. And being that I'm not a huge Ron fan, I felt my own tiny bubble of sadness when Ron/Hermione went explodie all over HBP.
But what the hell is this? You're protesting book seven over a relationship? Are you insane?
COME ON ALREADY!
Look, I'll agree that the delusional question was out of line, but please. I don't take it personally. It's a comment made by a stranger. Guess what? You don't get to write the books, as you aren't Jo. You don't get to make the decisions, and it's rather arrogant to get all pissy over the fact that the author is plowing ahead with a ship that's been plugging along since the two characters became friends? Do you see us rarepair shippers going bezerk because we're not getting our way?
Just as it's annoying when Ron/Hermione shippers get smug and impudent over their ship, it's irritating when you give the rest of the H/Hr shippers a bad name. Who cares? We still have fanfiction. It's not like it's impossible to write more than one or two ships, or two ships who contradict each other anyways. Proof? Look at the ships that I've written or are in the process of writing:
Hagrid/Dobby [yes, you read that right]
and others as well.
What's the point?
The point is, it doesn't matter. People need to stop either being arrogant or throwing bitch-fits. Romance is not the end-all, be-all, of the series. The books are not finished, and we won't know what happens to any and all ships involved until JK Rowling blesses us with her next book.
And anyways, romance is not the most important part of the book. Who cares if Remus and Tonks got together? Who cares if Fleur of the Phlegm and Bill are staying together? Isn't the death of Dumbledore more important? Snape's percieved betrayal? Harry's decision to leave Hogwarts, and Hermione and Ron's consequent decision to follow? Shipping is all well and good, but I hardly think it's something to smash into the faces of the rest of us. Hey, some of us are tired of hearing that you were right and they were wrong. We don't care. We're more interested in Horcruxes and Pettigrew than who's stepping into broom closets.
Whatever you ship, don't be afraid to ship proudly. You like what you like, and that's your choice. However, on the same note, don't go around trying to sink the ships and egos of the ones around you. It doesn't make you better or worse than the rest of us. Going around and being bratt, about it, only makes you look like a six year old and the rest of your crew look like snot-nosed brats because people get too irritated to get to know them. Lighten up, laugh a little, and learn to respect the differences of opinion between shippers. What we prefer comes from a lifetime of personal experiences and adventures, and this colours our opinions when it comes to things like ships. Would you like it if someone came and started bashing your ships for no other reason than that they thought it was 'stupid'? No. So get over it, and for those of you who won't be quiet and let the rest of us, shippers and non-shippers alike- get over yourself.
